In fact, they are probably best left out of the bag to begin with or at least until you are playing the easier clubs, such as the short and mid irons, confidently. If you are all over the golf course with the long irons, and do not like playing them, then definitely leave them out of the bag.

There is a definite technique to playing the long irons well, and one which has to be learned and can be learned by everyone, with practice. One of the characteristics the golfer is trying to acquire all the time is a consistent golf swing, in order to play the whole range of golf shots in the same repetitive manner. This probably sounds dull, but I assure you, a consistent golf swing will not let you down and is worth cultivating.
One of the best means of learning the feel of a rhythmic swing is to swing a rope, or a chord with a weight tied to the end. This is quite an old technique, but an effective one.
The smooth rhythmic action of a golf swing is just what is needed to play the long irons well. There is not much loft on the club, and you need the smooth and unhurried tempo to hit these shots properly.
Do not overswing, a three quarter length backswing is quite far enough. What matters most from this position is generating sufficient clubhead speed to power the ball long and straight distances, and the focus of your practice should be on making this happen.
One you have mastered the technique of playing the long irons your golf game will start to improve and you will be shooting lower scores.
